The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.

The qualifications for membership in the Olean High School chapter of NHS include the following criteria:

  • A student at OHS for at least one semester
  • Be a junior or senior
  • Hold an overall average of 90% or higher
  • Demonstrate outstanding performance in the four areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character

Students who have met these criteria will receive an application for membership at the end of September with a Tapping Ceremony and Induction Luncheon to follow in late fall.  Olean High School uses certain selection guidelines including the use of a faculty council when selecting students for membership to NHS.  This council consists of five voting faculty members, appointed annually by the principal. Selection for membership to the chapter will be by a majority vote of the faculty council.
